INTRODUCTION
------------
Welcome to Burlington, Vermont. This scenery is the first section
of a set of files. It was completed first for three reasons:
1) I live here and it's my computer.
2) I'm familiar with the area and can include a very high
level of detail.
3) There's more to see in Chittenden County than any other
place in Vermont.
In these scenery files you will find cities, islands, mountain
ranges, and tourist attractions.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
---------------------
These files are designed to work in conjunction with SubLOGIC's
SD-12 scenery disk. When used with other scenery disks, some anoma-
lies should be expected. For example, if you use the default scen-
ery file that comes with Microsoft's Flight Simulator 4.0B you will
find that:
1) Limited radio navigation is available since VOR transmit-
ters in the area are not implemented. You can work around this
by homing in on the local AM radio stations which act as NDB
transmitters. Use 055, 062, 123, or 139 depending on the
station you want. The beacons are located on the center tower
of multi-tower arrays.
2) Headings are shifted 18 degrees at the Burlington Airport.
Runway 15, which normally has a compass heading of 145.50
degrees, will now have a heading of 126 degrees. As a result,
you will not be able to use the ILS localizer because there
will be a readout error.
3) Since the default scenery that comes with Flight
Simulator 4.0B does not include a lake, sailboats will appear
to be floating over dry land, islands will appear as moun-
tains, and bridges will span flat grassy land.
To use this enhanced scenery, locate your plane at NORTH 18764.6320
EAST 21076.9828. This is the take off point of runway 15.
The epicenter for files SD12BTV0 are located at the Burlington
International Airport at the crossing of runways 1 and 15 encom-
passing a radius of 10 nautical miles. This size was chosen so that
when additional scenery is added to other areas, there will be a
smooth transition from one file to the next. This is also the
reason why collateral scenery extends out to a radius of 35 nauti-
cal miles from the Burlington VOR.
The following configuration settings are standard for all ADS files
in this series:
Static = 25 kb
Dynamic = 35 kb
Dynamic objects = 30
The file SD-12.AD1 is preset to the above settings. The most con-
venient way of setting the configuration is to rename SD-12.AD1 to
CONFIG.AD1 after either saving or deleting your current version of
this file. The scenery file configuration must be set prior to
running the simulator.

BURLINGTON, VERMONT
-------------------
Burlington is Vermont's largest city. It's surrounded by Winooski
to the North, Essex Junction to the Northeast, South Burlington to
the East and South, Lake Champlain's shores to the West, and Col-
chester to the Northwest.
Corner of Pearl and Battery Streets (North-East corner):
BATTERY PARK WATER FOUNTAIN - Located at the south end of
Battery Park, this beautiful fountain is lit by colored lights
at night. The park itself still has a cannon once used against
the British Navy.
EPISCOPALIAN CHURCH - A modern structure carefully detailed
here to include the bell tower, trees, and a parking lot with
cars.
Battery Street: South of the Episcopalian Church is the Radisson
Hotel. Be careful crossing the street. The traffic's pretty heavy.
Break Water: At the west end of Main Street, just off the shore
line, is a break water.
Church Street (Eastern side):
GENERIC BUILDINGS - The main downtown shopping district of
Burlington is an open mall. Church Street, once the main
street of the downtown area, has been filled in with brick to
make it a walkway. Although it's still called a street, it's
now known as the Church Street Marketplace and is closed to
traffic.
UNITARIAN CHURCH - Located at the North end of Church Street,
this structure is conspicuous because of its high white bell
tower. This very detailed representation includes the parking
lot on the side of the building as well as the three doorways
on the front of the church.

UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT (Burlington)
----------------------------------
The University of Vermont Campus now is included as part of this
package. The campus is on the east side of the City of Burlington.
The campus is depicted as a park with grass, trees, water fountain,
and modern art work (on the south end), surrounded by the following
buildings:
1) The Ira Allen Chapel located at the northeast corner is a
striking building. The two features that make this building
stand out are its dome center and tall watch tower.
2) Along the east side of the park are generic classroom
buildings.
3) On the west side of the park you'll find the Waterman
Administation Building.
4) On the northwest corner is the University Health Center.
This building was the home of the DeGoesbriand Hospital for
many years before the building was renovated and turned into a
medical office complex.
5) East of the Ira Allen Chapel is the Medical Center of
Vermont - one of the largest and most complete hospitals in
Vermont.
6) South of the Medical Center of Vermont is the Burlington
Water Tower.

COLCHESTER, VERMONT
-------------------
Three main features dominate the Colchester area:
1) The Winooski River ultimately passes through Colchester
into Lake Champlain.
2) Radio Station WVMT, 620 on the AM dial is located here.
WVMT studios, transmitters, and three tower antenna system
will be on your left as you approach ILS runway 15.
3) Mallet's Bay makes this area ideal for summer water sports.
That's why you'll find a sailboat enjoying the waters of the
bay.

ESSEX JUNCTION, VERMONT
-----------------------
This happens to be where I live and you'll find my house just off
Route 15. It's a white duplex, with a two car garage and a white
car (actually a station wagon) in the parking lot.
I.B.M. Corporation, located in Essex Junction, is one of Vermont's
largest industries. Since the late 1950's, it's grown from a single
warehouse to a huge manufacturing complex that produces most of the
memory chips used in I.B.M. computers.
The Winooski River flows past the I.B.M. property over a small
hydro-electric dam. There are some little islands with trees on the
west side of the bridge. The water is very turbulent in the spring
during the winter run-off, and is depicted this way in the scenery.
The bridge used to be a dangerously narrow suspension bridge. It's
been replaced by a safer open bridge of modern design.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN
--------------
The lake water level is measured at the King Street Ferry dock in
Burlington. Fifty years ago, the lake water level was around 105 to
110 feet deep at the dock. A decrease in snow and rain has taken
its toll on the lake. By the late 1980's the water level in July
was usually around 95 feet. That means 10 to 15 feet of water has
slowly evaporated or run off.
The effect on the lake has been devastating. North of Mallet's Bay
and Colchester is an area called the Sand Bar Fish and Game
Reserve. A bridge connects the Sand Bar to South Hero on Grand
Isle. This bridge is included in your scenery for this area. At one
time, the Sand Bar Bridge used to flood in the Spring when the
winter water run-off made the lake level rise. Now the water is so
shallow, the Coast Guard has to mark a dredged pathway so boats can
pass underneath the bridge without running aground. Lake Champlain
depth charts dated 1989 show the water level around the Sand Bar
Bridge to be only 1 to 2 feet deep. If the situation gets much
worse, the bridge will be crossing dry land.
On the brighter side, Lake Champlain is dotted with islands large
and small. Here are all of the ones you'll find in these scenery
files:
VALCOR ISLAND near Plattsburgh, N.Y.
PROVIDENCE and STAVE ISLANDS south of
Grand Isle, Vt.
SCHUYLER ISLAND and the FOUR BROTHERS ISLANDS
south of Port Kent, N.Y.
JUNIPER ISLAND and ROCK DUNDER on the northwest
tip of Shelburne Bay, Vt.

RICHMOND, VERMONT
-----------------
Richmond is a typical Vermont small town. There are two interesting
things to see here:
1) There's a suspension bridge on Interstate 89 that crosses
the Winooski River.
2) Further south is a remarkable tourist attraction called The
Old Round Church. Recently renovated, this 16 sided building
was constructed in 1812-13. It's open to the public during the
summer. There's plenty of open space to land a plane if you
want to see it from ground level.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VERMONT
-------------------------
What is called Main Street in Burlington becomes Williston Road in
South Burlington. At the crossing of Williston Road and
Interstate 89 (Exit 14) is the Sheridon Inn, Holiday Inn, and a
Howard Johnson.
Other things to look for in South Burlington are:
1) The Digital Equipment plant near Williston.
2) The tank farm on the Lake Champlain shoreline - filled with
winter heating oil.
The Burlington International Airport, located in South Burlington,
has been detailed and error corrected. The airfield conforms with
NOAA publications regarding runway lengths, markings, and approach
lights. The ILS localizer has been adjusted to use a 3.50 degree
angle of descent so that the vertical intercept at 2,000 feet is
4.4 nautical miles from the beginning of runway 15. Runway headings
are in error by approximately 1 degree. For example: Approach ILS
runway 15 using a heading of 145.50 degrees, not 146.20 degrees as
published in the NOAA airport terminal information directory.
The airport is shared with the Vermont Air Guard whose buildings
are on the east side of the facility depicted as two large hangers
with a red and white water tower in the back. At the end of
runway 19 is an administration building for the Air National Guard
(east side) and a building for the U.S. Customs Department (west
side). There is also airplane fuel and parking for private pilots
at Montair on the southwest side of the field.
The main terminal building is located on the west side of the
airport. There have been extensive renovations to the building over
the years as the airport has continued to grow. The old control
tower is now an observation lounge that's open to the public so
they can get a good view of the airfield.
The new control tower is connected to the FAA building north of the
main terminal. Manned 24 hours-a-day, pilots from all over the
Northeast get current weather information for their flight plans
from personnel located in this facility.

WINOOSKI, VERMONT
-----------------
Winooski is an Indian word which means "Onion". The city has a
very strong French-Canadian population. Winooski was once a mill
town that was later abandoned when the textile industry migrated
south.
In the mid 1970's, the Winooski dome made international news.
Although it was never built, the dome was supposed to cover most of
the city to protect it from bad weather while the green house
effect supplied heat to save energy. It was an interesting idea
during the fuel shortage years of the mid 70's, but when fuel
became more abundant, the idea was abandoned.
Instead, Winooski received a number of grants to restore the down-
town shopping area. One of the buildings that was renovated as part
of this project was an old woolen mill. For years its broken win-
dows, old paint, and shabby condition made it an eye soar. Today
it's the home of a four floor shopping complex and office building
- appropriately called The Mill.
Near The Mill a bridge connects Winooski to the city of Burlington.
Grass and trees surround The Mill's parking lot including a gazebo
that serves as a bus stop. Many of the trees change color with the
seasons. Generic buildings across the street from The Mill repre-
sent some of the restored structures. Local businesses are on the
street level with apartments located upstairs.
During the Spring run-off, the water flowing along the river be-
comes extremely violent - which is the way it's depicted in the
simulation.
Planes landing on runway 15 fly overhead. No doubt you'll be one of
them.

RADIO STATIONS
--------------
WDEV is located near Waterbury, Vermont and is the dean of Vermont
radio stations. Although it runs only 5,000 watts of power,
its low frequency of 550 carries the signal to a large portion
of the mid-upper part of the state. The three transmitting
towers are directly in front of you when you drive north bound
on Interstate 89 past Exit 10 in Waterbury.
WDOT uses three towers - one of which is shorter than the other.
The studios are located in downtown Burlington. The station
began operations on 1400 with 1000/250 watts of power. In the
mid 1980's it changed frequency to 1390 and increased its
power to 5000 watts daytime using a two tower directional
antenna. When you approach ILS runway 15, you'll fly right
over WDOT's antennas.
WJOY is located on the south side of Burlington. The original
studios, transmitter, and tower were located on the east side
of Burlington near what is now Interstate 89 Exit 14. In 1960,
it expanded its operations with the addition of Vermont's
first FM radio station - WQCR (Queen City Radio). Several
years later, the station moved to its present facilities and
added stereo sound to its FM station. The original transmitter
site was leveled and there's no trace that any radio station
ever existed at that location. The FM station has changed
formats several times over the years. It's also changed its
call letters to WOKO-FM playing country music 24 hours a day.
WJOY continues to operate on a frequency of 1230 khz. with
1000/250 watts of power.
WVMT is located in Colchester. Its three towers are on your left as
you approach ILS runway 15 and the WDOT towers. The studios
are located next to the towers. WVMT is one of Vermont's
oldest radio stations, operating on a frequency of 620 with
5000 watts daytime power.
WWSR is located north of the city of St. Albans. The station uses a
single tower an broadcasts on 1420 khz with a single tower.
The transmitting tower is the epicenter for scenery file
SD121B70 which has a radius of 10 miles.

NAVIGATIONAL AIDS
-----------------
As mentioned in the Introduction, all of the radio station trans-
mitting towers can be used as navigational aids. Tune your ADF
radio to the frequency of the station in kiloherz divided by ten,
i.e., WDOT on 1390 is received using ADF frequency 139 (1390/10).
This should give users running blank scenery some limited radio
navigation.
In addition to the radio stations, the Morrisville-Stowe NDB trans-
mitter JRV has been activated on 375. The Mount Mansfield NDB on
275 has also been activated.

DYNAMIC SCENERY
---------------
There's plenty of action in Chittenden County as you fly around.
You'll find traffic in downtown Burlington and cars racing down
Interstate 89 from South Burlington to Colchester. Sailboats catch
the breezes in Shelburne Bay, Mallet's Bay, and around the break
water off the shore line of downtown Burlington.
At the airport, a student pilot is doing touch and go landings on
runway 15. A 767 is ready for take off and later on another 767
will land and taxi to the airport terminal.

A NEW PLANE: THE FLEEBEE
------------------------
The FleeBee is an ultra-light, slow speed, low altitude plane. If
such a plane were ever built it would have to be made of light
weight space age materials. It's designed to carry a payload of 300
pounds - or two people - use a light weight 40 horse power engine,
and be very stable. It cruises at 30 to 35 knots and can maintain
an altitude of 200 feet without an auto pilot.
The secret of the plane's design is its huge wing. It's really a
sail plane with an engine. The plane normally doesn't go fast
enough for the horizontal stabilizers to do anything on the tail,
so they've been kept small. This tends to make the plane fly
slightly nose up, but all attempts to correct this problem only
seem to make the plane more unstable.
The 40 horse power engine may seem under powered on take off but
once airborne, you'll be running the engine near idle speed. The
flaps control the planes spoilers which are only used for landing.
Do NOT use any flaps on take off or you'll never get off the
ground.
Two things you must never forget when flying the FleeBee are to
make your turns slowly and watch your altitude as you turn. If you
turn too sharply and don't have enough air speed, you'll lose your
lift and nose dive.
To make flying the FleeBee more realistic, use a limited instrument
panel. And finally, never fly the FleeBee when there's wind or
turbulence.
